1. Design and physical characteristics

The iPhone X already has a replacement: the new iPhone XS, which this time is accompanied by an even larger version. The ‘Plus’ range has given way to a new generation that opens with the iPhone XS Max.

Apple’s new smart phones are made of the toughest glass ever used on a mobile – making them scratch-resistant and making wireless charging easy – and include high-quality stainless steel edges.

Both models are available in three colors: the classic silver and space gray that we saw in the iPhone X, as well as a new finish in gold that differentiate it from the previous generation.

On the other hand, both the iPhone XS and the iPhone Xs Max use a higher degree of protection than the iPhone X, which had an IP67 resistance, which means that it could withstand a full immersion at one meter depth for 30 minutes.

In contrast, the new models use an IP68 grade, so that it can be submerged in liquid up to 2 meters deep for half an hour. Apple claims that it can immerse itself in all kinds of liquid: water, orange juice, tea, beer, wine, etc.

2. Screen

As it happened with the iPhone X, the screen of the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max extends across the surface, practically without needing edges, and we continue to see the presence of the characteristic notch that other brands have already copied.

Apple took advantage of the last Apple Event to present a new OLED monitor, which they call Super Retina, and which offers HDR technology and colors and blacks much more accurate and true to reality.

This means that you can play movies and view HDR images with sharpness and pixel density like never before on an Apple smartphone. The dynamic range, in addition, has improved by 60% and has a wider color range.

The OLED screen of the iPhone XS measures 5.8 inches and has a resolution of 2436 x 1125, with 2.7 million pixels and 458 pixels per inch. Its size would be equivalent, for example, to the total surface of an iPhone 8 model.

On the other hand, the OLED monitor of the iPhone XS Max measures 6.5 inches and has a resolution of 2688 x 1242, 3.3 million pixels and also 458 pixels per inch. We can match its size to the total surface of the iPhone 8 Plus.

3. Neutral Engine with the new A12 Bionic chip

Apple has introduced a new processor for its iPhone: the A12 Bionic chip, which the company has defined as the most intelligent and powerful ever to be used in a smartphone. In addition, it has been designed with the iPhone in mind and not another phone.

It is the first 7-nanometer chip, which means a big step forward. It consists of 6.9 million transistors and its fusion architecture includes six cores with two performance cores, four efficiency cores and a quad-core GPU.

It is also capable of processing 5 trillion operations per second, which makes it 30% faster than the previous generation. It also has a faster storage controller that allows 512 GB of space.

All this means is that the daily actions that the average user performs on their mobile will be carried out more quickly, but also that the battery has been improved. The iPhone XS has 30 minutes more than the iPhone X, and the XS Max, an hour and a half more.

Automatic learning has also been improved, which extends to real-time apps like the camera and those that work with augmented reality.

4. A smarter rear camera and software

The improved processor of the iPhone XS also allows the rear camera to be even more powerful. Apple has introduced a new dual camera that, according to the Cupertino, gives way to a new era of photography and videography.

This dual camera includes a wide-angle lens of 12 MP and another telephoto lens also of 12 MP. The camera has dual optical image stabilization, a 2x optical zoom, a new sensor much faster and a flash with enhanced True Tone technology.

But what really makes this new camera much better is a software more intelligent than ever with an image processing also more automatic than ever. It presents another breakthrough: advanced depth segmentation.

That means that the results achieved with the bokeh effect are even more professional. The user will be able to control the depth of each photograph and add a background in the portraits that will not go unnoticed.

On the other hand, when taking a picture, and with the help of the A12 Bionic chip, the iPhone XS is able to offer an automatic exposure, balance and focus, as well as apply a noise reduction, highlight details and detect faces.

Obviously, the quality of the videos also improves with the iPhones XS and XS Max. In addition to the greater video stabilization, the quality also improves in low light situations and stereo sound can be recorded with the four integrated microphones.

5. Front camera with enhanced Face ID

Apple has worked with different technologies to improve the Face ID experience so that the iPhone XS is able to recognize your face more quickly and show you right away your notification center.

In this sense, the new Face ID includes a proximity sensor, an ambient light sensor, a front camera, a DOT projector, a microphone, a speaker, an integrated Flood illuminator and an infrared camera.

The front camera with a 7 megapixel lens uses TrueDepth technology, which, according to the apple company, is the one that offers a more accurate, faster and safer detection capacity in the sector.

6. New connectivity technologies: LTE class Gigabit and Dual SIM

The two new iPhone models include the 4G LTE Advanced mobile communication standard. This system will improve the download speed, although it must be taken into account that it is only compatible with certain operators.

On the other hand, a very important novelty is the inclusion for the first time in an iPhone of Dual SIM technology (double SIM5), which allows having two mobile numbers – and therefore two different data rates – in the same device.

7. iOS 12

The iPhones XS and XS Max will include the newest iOS operating system: iOS 12, which has been available for download on other compatible iPhone models since September 17.

In the past WWDC, Apple presented the novelties that this new mobile system would bring. These include the new Memoji, new augmented reality experiences, a time control feature, Siri’s new shortcuts, and more.
