Ok, as someone that actually works for Microsoft, I’m gonna step in for a sec and defend RIM, especially towards the “just a day” comment .
First off all, everyone on Office 2010 64-bit, don’t hold your breath with getting BDM to work with your install in the near future in my opinion. In the readme’s that we release that no one reads, you’ll first note that it says:
“If you need the functionality of WMDC and you have already installed 64-bit Outlook 2010 or Click-to-Run, uninstall Office 2010 and install the standard installation of 32-bit Office 2010.
Otherwise, install the standard installation of 32-bit Office 2010 if you want to continue to use WMDC.”
WMDC is WindowsMediaDeviceCenter, but what this really means is that no 32-bit add-ins work in 64-bit Office, and as there’s never been a native 64-bit Office, there are pretty much no add-ins out there at all.
RIM BDM, SalesForce, WebEx, CRM, you name it, they don’t work.
Later on in the doc you get to:
“Existing 32-bit ActiveX controls, both third-party and Microsoft-supplied, are not compatible with the 64-bit version of Office 2010. For ActiveX controls and COM objects, there are three possible solutions:
If you have the source code, you can generate a 64-bit version yourself,
- You can contact the vendor for an updated version,
- You can search for an alternative solution.
Native 64-bit processes in Office 2010 cannot load 32-bit binaries. This includes the common controls of MSComCtl (TabStrip, Toolbar, StatusBar, ProgressBar, TreeView, ListViews, ImageList, Slider, ImageComboBox) and the controls of MSComCt2 (Animation, UpDown, MonthView, DateTimePicker, FlatScrollBar).These controls were installed by previous versions of Microsoft Office and are installed by 32-bit Office 2010. An alternative must be found for existing Microsoft Office VBA solutions that utilize these controls when the code is migrated to 64-bit Office 2010. 64-bit Office 2010 does not provide 64-bit versions of the Common Controls.”
So, if I had the 64-bit version of O2010 installed, (which I did), I’d downgrade to 32-bit if you’re looking for near-future compatibiliy. Unless for some reason you’re working in Excel spreadsheets that you need more that 4GB of RAMto work with. O_o
Now, yes, I’m bummed out that RIM has not yet coughed up a 32-bit connector myself. I tried out an HTCImagio while I was waiting around the past few months and it’s so slow and unresponsive that I wanted to drive the thing over with an earthmover. Now I’m back on my Curve2 and just making due emailing myself reminders. And yes, if it takes too long, I’ll downgrade to ’07 and then back up to ’10 if need be.
In fact, I see folks saying that they’ve gotten it to work with 2010 and I have no clue how because no matter how I swirl the potion of install this un install that, I always get the “message stores” issue, so good on those folks, and feel free to enlighten us if you have any tips.
Anyways, I do hope they come out with their 32-bit connector soon, but as Office 2010 was just RTM a few weeks ago, I’m not sure how long it will take them.
